Are Standing Desks Good For You?
Looking to reduce the likes of muscle stiffness, bad posture, fatigue or poor circulation as someone who works at a desk? Then standing desks can absolutely help!
The idea of a standing desk isn’t that you necessarily stand all day every day, rather you have the option to shift your position throughout the day.
It’s recommended that you stand for two hours a day during office hours, moving every 30 minutes.
Regular movement - including standing - benefits every part of your body, including your brain, shoulders, back and core muscles, as well as boosting the
oxygen flow to your brain, making you feel more alert.
How Do Standing Desks Compare to Traditional Desks?
If you have ever worked at a standard desk, you will know that while they offer a familiar format, they also have a lot of limitations.
As they aren’t adjustable and instead have a fixed height, it can mean your desk doesn’t feel comfortable to work at, resulting in aches, strains and pains.
In contrast, standing desks are fully adjustable whether you want to stand or sit. The ability to adjust the height of the desk is made possible
by having a better build quality, which also makes the desk feel more sturdy.
Ultimately, if you want to be able to improve your health and productivity, a standing desk is built with the human body in mind.
What Are the Dangers of Sitting All Day at My Desk?
Honestly, where do we begin? There are many serious health risks that have been linked to prolonged or
excessive sitting - in fact, a number of studies warn that sedentary lifestyles are likely to be causing as many deaths as smoking.
Studies have shown a link between sitting for long periods and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, certain types of
cancer - including colon and breast cancer - type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis. A sedentary lifestyle can also lead to weight
gain, poor mental health and muscle degeneration.
One of the main reasons why standing desks have become so popular is that it gives office workers a chance to change up their posture,
so that they aren’t confined to sitting all day. Moving every 30 minutes and either standing or doing light activity (such as light walking)
for a total of two hours every work day can help to reduce the risks of prolonged sitting.
What is the Best Way to Transition to a Standing Work Desk?
Going from sitting to standing at a desk should be a gradual process, as it can take time for your
body to adjust. We recommend starting with small time increments, such as 10-20 minutes of standing
before sitting down, and rotating so that you are not fixed in a certain posture for too long. In between,
you should also look to move around.
Some of our desks - including the WELLNESS range - can be used alongside the
Yo-Yo WELLNESS® app, which can provide you with prompts telling you whether it’s time to sit or stand.
As long as you don’t try and commit to standing all day every day right away, you should find the transition
comfortable and more energising compared with long periods of sitting.
How Long Should You Stand at a Standing Desk Each Day?
It’s generally recommended that during your standard work day, you should be standing or doing light activity
for a minimum of two hours. We know it’s not realistic for most workers to go wandering around the
office for two hours every day, but standing is like the ‘first gear’ of physical activity - if we’re standing,
we’re far more likely to move, fidget or walk than we are if we’re sitting down.
When you first get a standing desk, a common mistake is standing for too long rather than gradually
allowing your body to adjust. For that reason, if using a compatible desk,
we recommend using the Yo-Yo WELLNESS® app with your standing desk to ensure you maintain a healthy balance throughout the day.
How High Should a Standing Desk Be?
The ideal exact height for a standing desk is different for everyone, as the desk height will need to be
adjusted based on how tall you are, as well as your elbow position, monitor height and overall comfort.
Head over to our blog post called "What Height Should My Standing Desk Be?", where we have covered this topic in further detail.
Is Standing at Your Desk Better Than Sitting?
It’s a simple fact that we humans were designed to move rather than be sedentary, especially for large swathes
of the day as we work at our computers. Even if you only stand up for part of the day, this can have
lots of benefits for your health and wellbeing. Various studies have shown a link between working at a standing
desk and improvements in cardiovascular health, posture, energy levels and even the number of calories burned in a day.
What is a Good Standing Desk For Working From Home (WFH)?
In short, a standing desk should be ergonomic and offer flexibility so that it can be adjusted as needed.
It’s also important that a standing desk is well made! At Yo-Yo Desk, you’ll find a wide array of standing desks that not only meet but exceed this criteria.
For instance, our Yo-Yo DESK® PRO 3 was named as one of the best large standing desks for offices by
The Independent.
What is an Electric Standing Desk?
At Yo-Yo Desk, we stock a range of electric standing desks. Also known as an electric rising desk, they offer effortless adjustment of your desk with just the touch of a button.
Some models allow you to pre-set both your standing and sitting heights.

very versatile option, allowing you to quickly adjust the height of the desk to ensure excellent ergonomics every time you want to change positions.
Do I Need an Anti-Fatigue Mat For My Standing Desk?
Anti-fatigue mats aren’t essential, though they can greatly enhance the experience of working at a standing desk.
They can also ensure a more comfortable transition to standing rather than sitting while you work.
Anti-fatigue mats provide cushioning underfoot which can stimulate blood circulation
in the legs and prevent aching legs. These mats are intuitively designed to reduce strain, which can in turn lessen the pressure on the feet,
legs and lower back.
Our Active Feet range has plenty of anti-fatigue mats to explore. For standing desks in particular,
we recommend checking out the Yo-Yo Mat.
